A guide explains to a group of Italian students that what’s remarkable about the Charioteer of Delphi (the bronze sculpture depicting a teenage victor) is his expression.

Although he has won the race, his composure remains calm and measured. His face reflects humility, not triumph , a powerful reminder that in Greek culture, true victory meant achieving greatness without arrogance.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis visited the Delphi Museum and was photographed quietly admiring the Charioteer , a testament to the sculpture’s enduring allure and the timeless values it embodies.

Standing 1.8 meters (5 feet 11 inches) tall, the Charioteer was discovered in 1896 by French archaeologists during excavations at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. Cast in bronze around 470 BCE, it remains one of the finest surviving examples of ancient Greek sculpture a masterful expression of poise, honor, and self-restraint.

Temple of Apollo 🌿☀️— The Delphic Maxims

The entrance of the Temple of Apollo was famously inscribed with three moral maxims:

“Know Thyself” — Γνῶθι σαυτόν
“Nothing in Excess” — Μηδὲν ἄγαν
“Surety Brings Ruin” — Ἐγγύα πάρα δ’ ἄτα

Ancient texts strongly suggest these were carved into the temple or prominently displayed for all visitors. While no physical fragments of the original inscriptions have survived, their influence on Greek philosophy and culture remains timeless.

Olga de Amaral (b. 1932, Colombia) initially trained as an architect, drawing inspiration from Bauhaus principles while deeply rooted in Colombia’s ancient textile traditions and folk artistry.

Her early works reflected this fusion, but over time, her pieces evolved beyond the confines of the wall, transforming into three-dimensional, architectural forms.

Through her intricate weaves, she creates immersive spaces of meditation, contemplation, and reflection.
