Klimt / Schiele Drawings from the Albertina Museum, Vienna

See rare and fragile drawings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, offering intimate insights into their artistic relationship and differing creative processes. This extraordinary collaboration with the Albertina Museum in Vienna marks the centenary of both artists’ deaths.

1918 was a seismic year in Vienna. As the Austro-Hungarian Empire crumbled, the deaths of its two foremost artists brought about the end of an intense period of creative vitality that had blazed briefly but brilliantly across the city’s bohemian swirl. One was the radical Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt; the other the young, scandalous and prodigiously talented Egon Schiele.

As a number of key drawings in this exhibition will reveal, influence travelled in both directions between these two friendly rivals. Early sketches show how Schiele, in his own words, first “went by way of Klimt,” before the expressive power and searing directness of his mature work in turn left a mark on his older colleague. Both revelled in the immediacy of drawing, an ideal medium for exploring new ideas of modernity, subjectivity and the erotic.

Klimt / Schiele: Drawings is a unique opportunity to see some of the 20th century’s most important works on paper – amongst them Klimt’s sketches for his seminal Beethoven Frieze, and unflinching self-portraits by Schiele – which due to their delicacy will not see the light of day again for many years. In around 100 portraits, landscapes, nudes and erotic drawings, prepare to encounter these two icons of Modernism at their most raw and revealing.

Tate Modern explores the work of one of the best-known textile artists of the 20th century

As a student at the radical and ostensibly egalitarian Bauhaus art school, Anni Albers, like other women, was barred from becoming a painter. Instead she enrolled in the weaving workshop and made textiles her means of expression. Albers (1899–1994) rose to become an influential figure, exploring the technical limits of hand-weaving to pioneer innovative uses of woven fabric as art, architecture and design. Tate Modern’s full-scale retrospective explores this influential but rarely seen trailblazer for a new interdisciplinary art form. It brings together the most important examples of her work, from beautiful small-scale creations to wall hangings, as well as exploring the textiles she designed for mass-production and her use of new technologies and synthetic fibres.

Ed Ruscha: Course of Empire

See Ed Ruscha’s modern take on the cyclical nature of civilisation, evocative of Thomas Cole’s series of the same name

Ed Ruscha (1937–) has shaped the way we see the American landscape over the span of his influential six-decade career. Elegant, highly distilled, and often humorous, Ruscha’s work conveys a unique brand of visual American zen.

In 2005, Ruscha was asked to represent the United States at the 51st Venice Biennale. Dealing with the theme of “progress, or the course of progress,” Ruscha’s Biennale installation evoked Thomas Cole’s famous painting cycle of 1833–36, ‘The Course of Empire’, concurrently on display in the Ground Floor Galleries.

Unlike Cole’s grandiose vision of the rise and fall of a classical civilisation, Ruscha’s ‘Course of Empire’ focuses on the industrial buildings of Los Angeles – simple, box-like, utilitarian structures with no pretension to beauty but redolent of economic might and global reach.

This exhibition, the first retrospective in Paris devoted to Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela, traces the career, from spring-summer 1989 to spring-summer 2009, of a designer who not only questioned the structure of garments but also challenged the structure of the fashion system.

All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life

All Too Human celebrates the painters in Britain who strove to represent human figures, their relationships and surroundings in the most intimate of ways.

It features artists including Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon alongside rarely seen work from their contemporaries including Frank Auerbach and Paula Rego. Many of them lived or live in London, drawn to the multicultural capital from around the world. Three important works by Francis Bacon will be shown in the UK for the first time in at least three decades.

The exhibition also shows how this spirit in painting was fostered by the previous generation, from Walter Sickert to David Bomberg, and how contemporary artists continue to express the tangible reality of life through paint.

On December 15, 2017 the Triennale di Milano will inaugurate a unique exhibition dedicated to visionary designer Rick Owens.
The Curve, the Triennale’s signature exhibition space, will be transformed by Rick Owens into an involving pathway through two decades of endless creativity: a selection of more than 100 garments, objects, accessories, furniture and runway videos will be displayed and connected through a spectacular site-specific installation created by the designer for the occasion.

Basquiat: Boom for Real

Basquiat: Boom for Real is the first large-scale exhibition in the UK of the work of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960­-1988). One of the most significant painters of the 20th century, Basquiat came of age in the late 1970s in the post-punk underground art scene in downtown New York. By 1982, he had gained international recognition and was the youngest ever artist to participate in Documenta 7 in Kassel. His vibrant, raw imagery, abounding with fragments of bold capitalised text, offers insights into both his encyclopaedic interests and his experience as a young black artist with no formal training. Since his tragic death in 1988, Basquiat has had remarkably little exposure in the UK; not a single work of his is held in a public collection. Drawing from international museums and private collections, Basquiat: Boom for Real brings together an outstanding selection of more than 100 works, many never seen before in the UK, and opens at Barbican Art Gallery on 21 September 2017.

More than any other exhibition to date, Basquiat: Boom for Real focuses on the artist’s relationship to music, writing, performance, film and television, placing him within the wider cultural context of the time. Paintings, drawings, notebooks and objects are presented alongside rare film, photography, music and archival material, capturing the range and dynamism of Basquiat’s practice over the years.

Lucio Fontana Ambienti/Environments

“Ambienti/Environments” is focused on Lucio Fontana’s pioneering work in the realm of installation art, with a selection of his seminal Ambienti spaziali—seen together for the first time—that highlights the farsighted, innovative genius of this twentieth-century master.
The Ambienti spaziali (“Spatial Environments”), rooms and corridors that the artist began to conceive and design in the late 1940s, were almost always destroyed once the exhibition was over; they are Fontana’s most experimental yet least-known works, due to their ephemeral nature. Some of the environments on view have been reconstructed for the first time since the artist’s death through the research of art historian Marina Pugliese and art conservator Barbara Ferriani, co-curators of the show, with the collaboration of Fondazione Lucio Fontana.
Visitors have the opportunity to experience and enjoy this less familiar part of Fontana’s oeuvre for the first time, in an unprecedented presentation that reveals their historical importance while conveying their contemporary nature and innovative power.
Lucio Fontana (Rosario, Argentina, 1899, – Varese, Italy, 1968) was one of the most influential Italian artists of the mid-twentieth century. Fontana dedicated his entire career to investigating the concepts of space, light, the void and the cosmos. His work radically transformed our conception of painting, sculpture, and space by transcending the two-dimensionality of the canvas, and foreshadowed many movements of the 1960s and 1970s, like Arte Povera, Conceptualism, Land Art and Environmental art. As the founder of Spatialism, an artistic movement that emerged in Italy in the late ’40s, Fontana notably did away with the distinction between painting and sculpture, with his famous slashes and holes in the canvas.
The exhibition is curated by art historian Marina Pugliese, conservator Barbara Ferriani and Vicente Todolí, Artistic Director of Pirelli HangarBicocca, and will be accompanied by a catalog, published by Mousse Publishing (November 2017), that presents the most up-to-date international research into Fontana’s Ambienti, with an extensive selection of essays and images.

Walter De Maria

Surface Waves

A pioneering artist who worked at the intersection of Land art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism, Walter De Maria (1935–2013) used geometry and mathematics to create artworks that test the limits of sensory perception. In Walter De Maria: Surface Waves, the Bay Area native makes his SFMOMA debut with his first sculpture to enter the museum’s collection, an arresting floor piece known as Large Rod Series: Circle/Rectangle, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (1986). Consisting of massive, precisely honed polygonal rods polished to a shine so lustrous that they appear liquid, the work can be shown in three distinct configurations, all of which will be presented during the course of the exhibition. In the opening sequence, recordings of De Maria’s Ocean Music (1968) and Cricket Music (1964) will play in the galleries daily, offering an immersive experience of rhythm in sculpture and sound. In Parts 2 and 3, the exhibition expands to include alternative explorations of invisibility in drawings from the 1970s and 1980s.
